I have quickly learned that self-care is one the best gifts you can give to yourself. When I first heard about it, I thought it was an obvious thing to do, and I thought I already did self-care. Once life got even busier, I realized I was not partaking in the self-care movement quite like it is intended. Being in a helping profession, there is an obligation to be your best self, so you can adequately help others. I often relate back to the hero’s journey that has resonated with me ever since I learned about it, and while it is not taught alongside learning how to be kind to yourself, it fits for me. In my self-discovery, I had to recognize that I could not drain myself so that I could come to the aid of others. There had to come the point when I was ready to realize that for me to find myself and the role in this world, I had to be a healer for myself before I can expect to help others. Our minds and bodies are amazing things, but the fact of the matter is that we have to do what we can preserve them. Life is demanding, and it may not always be convenient to take a brain break or splurge on a nap. But we have to know our limits so that time can be spent refueling and recharging. It seems like I have learned the hard way about taking care of myself, but it is never too late to take part in some self-care efforts. To be my best self means I am taking care of myself to then give my best. Stay Curious, Kayla ©Inquisitive Perspectives 2018
